General Information
Geography:
Verania has a diverse landscape of forests, plains, coastline, farmland and vineyards, and a region of swampland. Its most well known geographical feature, called The Verdance, is a result of a Rupture where a Zanshian Citadel fell into a slain god's deathsite. From this magical swamp, many plants and creatures mutated from exposure to the wild magic flowing from the wound in the landscape. The Verdance is known for being extremely dangerous and surrounding the Grand Cachot, where the buried ruins of the once-great Citadel create a tempting dungeon full of magic and mystery.
Capital and Government:
Within Auduceil, capital of Verania, sits the royal court of their constitutional monarchy and parliament. Critics will note that Veranian government positions are quite oligarchical - positions of power can be inherited, but are otherwise earned through dedicated state service, most often through a family member joining the Gardes-Chasses (official knighthood).
Iconography:
White and Blue with Fleur de Lis for Government business
Gold and Blue for Les Gardes-Chasses
Important People:
Monarchs: King Clotaire and King Consort Desmond

Les Gardes-Chasses: A group of highly-skilled knights who protect the country’s residents from the creatures that come from the Grand Cachot and Verdance. The common image of the heroic knight in shining armor comes from these valiant monster-hunters and protectors of the realm.

Landmarks
Auduceil
The capital of Verania is Auduceil. Here reside King Clotaire and King Consort Desmond, who act as figureheads to the nation and advise the parlament. Auduceil is well-known for The University of Verania (L'Academe du Verania). The fashion of Auduceil influences many parts of the world.
Grand Cachot
Verania's country’s most well-known quirk is the Grand Cachot, where the citadel Azra fell and created magical waves across the land, resulting in monsters mutated from the volatile wild magic. The monarchs of Verania, King Clotaire and King Consort Desmond, oversee the Gardes-Chasses, a group of highly-skilled fighters, who protect the country’s residents from the creatures that come out of the Grand Cachot. The common image of the heroic knight in shining armor comes from these valiant monster-hunters. Although the danger of the Grand Cachot is clear, adventurers from around the globe still risk their lives by venturing into its depths to try and retrieve the ancient Zanshian technology within.
The gravity defying technology from the fallen Zanshian Citadel Azra seems to be partially intact and functional. However, it ended up far beneath the surface. The buried core of the citadel is stuck in a perpetual attempt to elevate itself to its previous height. This results in the ground itself being elevated. Since the crash there has also been a steady and strong spout of water that comes from the atop the elevated ground. No one knows where the water comes from. The water flows into The Soradelle and The Ordeau and pushes the stream into the ocean to the east. There have not been any adverse effects from drinking the water, though it does give life to the creatures the Gardes-Chasses dedicate their lives to fighting.

Rouen
A coastal city known for its art, fashion, and spicy food. There is an overlap of Veranian and Nafarian influences resulting in an eclectic and artful feel. The city is built on top of a steep hill to help protect it from flooding, but the lower (and poorest) neighborhoods still sit fairly low on the floodplain. Although there are nearby beaches along the brackish waters that lead to the sea through marshland, swimming is not recommended, as the tides and currents can change quickly, dragging unsuspecting swimmers underwater and sea-ward.

Other Locations
D'Abri
A small farming town along The Ordeau in the southern part of Verania. It sits in a fertile valley nestled amongst otherwise dense forest.

Eradorne
An abandoned estate of the Eradorne family sits atop a hill surrounded by rolling hills of vineyards with a small forest in the distance.
Eradorne Wine was their main export and were very wealthy. The nearby villages were established to help tend the vast number of vineyards they owned. Disaster struck, and many of the warehouses they owned around Verania were burned. Their vineyards grew diseased and no longer produced grapes. The family all died in mysterious ways at roughly the same time across the country. Now the estate lies abandoned among the overgrown hills of the property believed to be haunted by the ghosts of Eradorne.
The House of Eradorne was once a large noble family of noteable wealth and status. They had many vineyards where they made Eradorian Wine. A wide spread and popular wine across the country. Some decades ago every member of the family mysteriously vanished, died of natural causes, or was found murdered in a very short amount of time. Their wine production was burned to the ground. Warehouses were raided in the night, the family's fortune was missing. Nothing was left. To this day Eradorian Wine is very rare as only a few known casks survived. The family castle sits abandoned believed to be cursed.

The Ordeau
A distributary river that breaks off from The Soradelle before again becoming multiple streams around the marshland that surrounds Rouen.

Pont-Lierne
A carriage ride away from the capital of Verania, Pont-Lierne is home to prosperous trade and a unique blend of businesses and industries that serve much of the country proper and provide necessary supplies to the academy in Auduciel. Its proximity to the ocean has birthed numerous tradespeople who harvest cephalopod ink, sea flora, whale oil, and other oceanic ingredients to create the fine inks for which Pont-Lierne is renowned. Guarded by an ocean's expanse and wrapped into The Soradelle—the river just to the North—the port city may not be the trade giant that Jayu Canton is, but it certainly doesn't want for business.

The Soradelle
A river that runs off from Jayu. It bifurcates when approaching the elevation of the Grand Cachot, but the stream that flows between Solarea and Verania and into the ocean remains the Soradelle.

Velimere
Pronunciation: VELL-uh-meer in Imperial Common [English], vay-lee-MARE in Venalian [French]
Current Rulers: Countess Léontine & Count Bernadin
Climate: Mediterranean (hot dry summer, cool damp winter)
Major exports: Wine, precious gems, magic crystals
Also known for: Center of training for knights and chevaliers, success in jousting and tournaments
Castle Velimere is a fortress located along the cliffs on Venalia’s southwestern coast. Beneath the Castle is an extensive system of seambathed caves where magic crystals and precious gemstones are mined. Count Bernadin and Countess Léontine currently rule their wealthy province (also called Velimere) from this castle. The province contains a number of small but prosperous villages and hamlets where fine wine is produced.
For generations, Castle Velimere has had a reputation as a center of training for knights. Since Venalian culture so highly values military skill, this has historically meant that Velimere was highly respected and powerful. About ten years ago, strange things started happening at Castle Velimere, beginning with odd injuries and disappearances...

The Verdance
The Verdance is arguably the most dangerous place in the world. It is home to dangerous creatures who are in a constant state of territorial disputes within their layer of the region. There are three demarcations of The Verdance, each more dangerous than its predecessor. From exterior to interior, the border are The Limits of Hope, The Royal Line, and The Final Farewell. There are caverns and caves within each layer of The Verdance that house untold dangers and all manners of creatures. No one has been able to reliably map out these underground tunnels. The beings who reside within The Verdance show little to no interest cross either The Soradelle or The Ordeau. When the Zanshain Citadel Azra fell, part of its core embedded itself deep underground underneath The Verdance. The core may somehow still be intact as evidenced by the elevation of The Verdance. As one enters into a new area of The Verdance, the altitude increases, adding to the danger. From a distance a stream of water can be seen flowing downward from the top of The Verdance. Without being able to examine it up close, it is believed this stream not only feeds into The Ordeau and The Soradelle, but provides sustenance for the creatures and being who lurk within this frightful area. The knights of Verania hold these forces at bay and earn the right to be known as the bravest knights in the world.
